El 26 de abril de 1970, entró en vigor el Convenio de la Organización Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual (OMPI). En ocasión de este suceso, los países miembros de la OMPI eligieron este día para celebrar el Día Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual. Así, cada año la OMPI organiza una campaña conmemorativa de difusión mundial para celebrar cómo el sistema de PI funciona en el mundo para beneficio de los creadores y autores y los innovadores fomentando que haya música, artes, y también para fomentar la innovación tecnológica. Este año, el tema de la celebración anual es: "Artífices del cambio: la mujer en la innovación y la creatividad".
