Effective 11 March 2021, the Government has announced, as part of a series of measures intended to reduce the COVID-19 transmission in Malta, the shutting down of certain establishments including all non-essential outlets, restaurants, bars, gyms, amongst others.
The Government announced that it is making available, with the collaboration of Malta Enterprise Corporation, to said establishments a full Wage Supplement amounting to circa €800 per employee per month.
It is noted that establishments that are already receiving this assistance need not re-apply. This being said, businesses, including self-employed entrepreneurs, that have now been ordered to shut down and that had not previously benefited from the 2020 Wage Supplement scheme may now apply for the full Wage Supplement available through this period until such time as they remain closed due to these restrictions. The electronic application form to be used for said purposes is expected to be uploaded on to Malta Enterprise's website in the coming days.
Businesses currently benefiting from the 2021 Wage Supplement Scheme, whose business has not ordered to shut down as a result of these new restrictions, shall continue to benefit from the 2021 Wage Supplement scheme implemented earlier this year in terms of which the assistance provided is calculated based on the reduction in sales suffered over a six month period in 2020 when compared to the same period in 2019.
