The Department of Merchant Shipping has issued an updated guide to ship registration, providing comprehensive information on all aspects of the registration of vessels under the Cyprus flag.1 The guide sets out the history of the Cyprus shipping sector and the structure of the maritime administration and legislative framework before detailing:
- the different types of registration available;
- the conditions of ownership and management, as well as operational requirements (particularly regarding safe manning);
- insurance against civil liability;
- classification societies; and
- radio traffic accounting authorities.
The section on registration sets out the administrative procedures to be followed and the supporting documentation to be submitted in connection with applications for:
- provisional registration;
- permanent registration;
- bareboat charter (parallel-in registration);
- parallel-out registration; and
- other registry transactions such as change of name, deletion from the register and mortgage-related matters
The guide includes full details of all fees and taxes payable. Further sections deal with the tonnage tax system, training, international relations and the certification and registration of seafarers.
