Cyprus became part of the European Union on 1 May 2004.
Recently, the European Union has gradually legislated
comprehensively to cover the area of electronic communications. The
'telecommunications package' which the European Union has
implemented has been designed to facilitate fair competition in the
electronic communications sector and consists of various legal
instruments which have a direct effect in EU Member States.
The EU legal framework is not limited to telecommunications
networks and services but also extends to cover electronic
communications networks and services. However, it is worth noting
that the European Union is currently considering reforms which will
inevitably affect the electronic communications sector and member
states which implement such regulations and laws.
