O Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial - INPI iniciou em 17 de abril de 2012, o Programa Piloto de Patentes Verdes. Os pedidos de Patentes Verdes são pedidos de patentes cujo foco está em tecnologias ambientalmente amigáveis, ou seja, patentes cuja tecnologia envolvida enquadra-se nas categorias de energias alternativas, transporte, conservação de energia, gerenciamento de resíduos e agricultura. Tal programa visa acelerar o exame dos pedidos de patentes enquadrados nestas categorias, priorizando, desta forma, a análise de patentes com menor impacto ambiental.

O programa piloto apresenta alguns requisitos necessários:

a) A natureza do pedido deverá ser de patente de invenção (PI);
