Can you tell us about your journey to becoming an in-house counsel? What inspired you to pursue a career in this field?

I started my career not knowing that working as a corporate lawyer would turn out to be exciting for me. I have worked in several multinational companies such as General Electric, Nissan Group, General Motors, American Tower and back in November 2022 I joined Mondelez company. I started as a legal intern at General Electric and from there I realised that working in a company I can contribute in a positive way.

I am proud to work in companies that have a long-term sustainable and legal vision and to be able to contribute are things that really inspired me to work in this field.

In your role as an in-house counsel, what are the main responsibilities and tasks you handle on a day-to-day basis?

Currently my main responsibilities are to advise the e-commerce team to take the company to the next level and achieve a digital transformation complying with legal regulations and best practices. I am responsible for the company’s privacy program, taking care of our employees, customers,’ and consumers’ personal data. Also, I am responsible for ensuring the fulfilment of the compliance program and promoting a compliance culture within our employees, suppliers, and business partners.

What are some of the key challenges you have faced as a rising star in-house counsel, and how have you overcome them?

From a legal standpoint and as an internal lawyer there are many challenges that I have faced, especially due to the lack of regulations in our country related to new technologies, however, I must always stay creative to keep the company within a legal framework by complying with laws and internal policies. To be prepared, I constantly follow up on the Mexican government initiatives, analyse the possible associated risks and define action plans to mitigate them. I also participate in cross-functional committees integrated by other countries where we share best practices and regulations on topics of interest.

What steps have you taken to enhance your professional development and expand your legal skill set?

I am a lawyer who constantly asks for feedback from my colleagues; it is a fundamental part of my growth as a professional. Likewise, I enrol in courses, take certifications, and join groups related to the topics of my interest such as privacy, data, compliance, and technology.
