About

Giuseppe Squicciarno joined Airbnb in May 2014 as its first lawyer in Ireland and third lawyer in Europe to support the Irish and EMEA operations. As a generalist, he has covered a lot of ground in terms of practice areas (litigation, regulatory, IT, data protection, contracts, employment) and in terms of jurisdictions, building relationships with a large number of external lawyers and law firms across Europe. Shortly after commencing in the role, he started to build and manage an internal legal team. In addition to working as a lawyer, he has worked as a people manager for the past 10 years having also led teams of paralegals and legal assistants in his previous job at Google. The teams he managed at Google were specialised in handling trademark complaints, data requests and corporate secretarial work. Squicciarno was at Google for 8 years, from April 2006 to April 2014 and, for a few months in 2013, he worked on secondment in the IP and IT team at A&L Goodbody focusing on IT and IP and outsourcing. At Google, his role evolved a lot across the years and, in addition to management, included supporting on general legal compliance matters, litigation, law enforcement and data requests, online advertising and trademark policies. Before Google, Squicciarno worked at Paypal for about a year in its risk and compliance organisation. He highlights that, ‘going back to the start of my career in 2002, after completing my law degree at the LUISS of Rome, I started to train as a lawyer in a law firm in Italy and, during that time, I took a 10 month break to travel to Ireland and gain some more international work experience by working in one of the top-five Irish “Trademark and Patent Attorney” firms (Anne Ryan and Co.) and by attending a diploma course in commercial law at the Law Society of Ireland’. Squicciarno qualified as an Italian avvocato in 2006, as a solicitor in Ireland in 2010 and as solicitor in England and Wales in 2017. He also holds a qualification as an executive coach in Ireland. He adds that, ‘having been the first member of the Dublin team while Airbnb was in its start-up phase, I had a great opportunity to help influence and build efficient internal processes… also, as my team supports one of the most developed regions in terms of business activity (EMEA), it has often been able to establish best practices, precedents and standards that have later been adopted by teams in other regions and across the company’. In the words of a nominator, ‘Airbnb’s disruption of the property rental market requires its legal counsel to keep ahead of the curve in terms of the novel legal issues the business model produces. It also means the regulatory mood can be tough on such a new industry, or is only responding to the business model as it emerges. This presents challenges to be navigated. With over 14 years of experience in the internet industry working for companies such as Google and PayPal, Squicciarino is well-placed to do so’.
