Natia Núñez Curiel
Legal director | CODACERO
What are the most significant cases, projects or transactions that you and your legal team have recently been involved in?
Over the past year, I have continued to lead the legal strategy behind a broad portfolio of complex corporate, commercial and industrial projects aligned with CODACERO’s core business. My role extends beyond providing legal advice; I work closely with senior management to ensure that legal considerations are fully integrated into strategic decision-making, risk management and business growth initiatives.
As Legal Director and a member of the company’s management committee, I have been actively involved in supporting key business negotiations, corporate governance matters, contractual risk management and regulatory compliance, always taking a practical and commercially focused approach that enables the organisation to move forward with confidence while protecting its long-term interests.
Beyond my responsibilities within the company, I actively participate in several committees of the Dominican Republic’s leading industry associations. Although many of the matters I oversee are confidential, my work consistently focuses on facilitating strategic business decisions, mitigating legal risks, and supporting sustainable corporate growth in an increasingly dynamic regulatory environment.
How do you approach managing legal matters during periods of instability or crisis to ensure the organisation’s resilience?
Periods of uncertainty reinforce the importance of involving legal counsel at an early stage of strategic decision-making. My approach is based on anticipation rather than reaction. I work closely with business leaders to identify legal and operational risks before they become obstacles, enabling the company to make informed decisions while remaining agile.
Effective crisis management also requires clear communication, pragmatic legal advice and a thorough understanding of the business. Rather than simply identifying risks, I focus on providing practical and commercially sound solutions that protect the organisation while enabling it to achieve its objectives.
In today’s environment, resilience also means continuously monitoring regulatory developments, geopolitical trends and evolving market conditions. By combining proactive risk management with a collaborative approach across departments, the legal function becomes an essential contributor to business continuity, corporate governance and sustainable growth.
General Counsel often speak of the need to be strategic to reach the pinnacle of the profession. What does being strategic mean to you?
To me, being strategic means making legal insight part of business thinking rather than treating it as a final checkpoint. It requires understanding the organisation’s objectives, anticipating challenges and translating legal complexity into clear, actionable guidance.
A strategic General Counsel not only minimises risk but also helps create value. By combining sound judgement, commercial awareness and trusted relationships across the organisation, the legal function can support better decision-making, stronger governance, effective negotiations and responsible growth.
Based on your experiences over the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on that you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful of?
I am closely following the convergence of artificial intelligence (AI), digital transformation and geopolitical uncertainty. Together, these developments are reshaping compliance, cybersecurity, contractual relationships, supply chains and corporate decision-making.
In-house lawyers should embrace innovation while helping their organisations establish appropriate governance, accountability and ethical safeguards. They must also look beyond legal rules and understand the economic, technological and geopolitical forces influencing business risk. Legal leaders who combine technical expertise with strategic foresight and commercial understanding will be better equipped to keep their organisations resilient and competitive.
