Career Biography

Joan Alba is a results-oriented legal professional with a strategic, multidisciplinary mindset and 20 years of experience working as an attorney in Tier 1 law firms and leading high-performance legal and corporate governance departments in the Dominican Republic. Since 2017, Joan has served as the General Counsel, Legal and Corporate Governance at Banesco Banco Múltiple, S.A. In this role, Joan manages the bank’s legal and corporate governance teams while providing strategic advisory to the President, C-line executives, and members of the Board of Directors. Joan is highly recognised for driving innovation, legal compliance, automation of KPI’s, integration of corporate best practices, and most recently implementing the bank’s Criminal Code compliance program and identifying and deploying AI proof of concept into minimum viable products that impact the legal department’s efficiency.

Prior to leading the legal and corporate governance department at Banesco Banco Múltiple, S.A., Joan developed extensive cross-functional experience across corporate law, financing, M&A, and worked on energy, banking and labor law cases. As an Associate Lawyer at Jiménez Cruz Peña, Joan directed due diligence processes and counseled clients on banking and financial regulation, project finance, capital markets, contract compliance and energy law. Joan also served as an Associate Lawyer at Bergés Rojas & Asociados, where Joan drafted contracts, prepared legal opinions, and managed litigation in civil, labor, and real estate law.

Joan holds a Juris Doctor from PUCMM, a Master’s in Corporate Law from Centro Internacional de Formación Financiera (CIFF) at Alcalá de Henares University, and a Master’s in Financial and Banking Law from Strasbourg University. A multilingual executive, Joan is a native Spanish speaker, bilingual in English, and intermediate in French.
