Firstly, can you give us an idea of the type of work your team has done recently?

As in-house lawyers, it is our job to be part of the front-line team in charge of evaluating the legal and structural aspects of new markets, as well as the possible risks and benefits of entering new countries, with jurisdictions completely different from our country of origin.

How do you keep up to date with changes in Dominican laws and regulations relevant to your organisation’s industry?

We do this by first relying on colleagues who, like us, have been part of the changes that have taken place in their organisations in general. Although laws and regulations try to remain at the forefront, the current times demand that as professionals we build up our own individual knowledge to cover all those particular issues that the law has not been able to reach. And, secondly, it is important that, we keep abreast of changes in other jurisdictions which, like ours, have decided to move forward progressively, making the necessary changes to keep pace with the times.

What is one cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about and why?

A particular concern that I have is the lack of legal certainty that exists for private investment in our country. It is imperative that our congresspeople try to legislate for the times we are currently living in and not continue wasting time on a dead letter, which does not adapt to the changes that globalisation demands and, therefore, forces private entrepreneurs to redirect their economic efforts outside our country. It is a pity that, instead of there being initiatives that encourage internal trade, of purely Dominican capital, the tax burdens, the general disorganisation of our public institutions and the general lack of security due to the lack of control, push our businesspeople to venture into markets other than our own.
