Can you describe an instance where your legal advice directly influenced business strategy or commercial objectives?

At Alianza Team, legal advice is embedded in competitive strategy. Our approach is grounded in a commitment to building long-lasting, shared-value relationships with all stakeholders, which demands consistency, ethical transparency and a deep understanding of the environments in which we operate in Colombia, México, United States, Chile and the Caribbean.

What key trends should in-house counsel be monitoring over the coming months?

Artificial intelligence is no longer a trend to monitor — it is a reality demanding urgent, deeper adoption. Legal teams must move beyond surface-level usage and scale AI integration into large-scale projects, unlocking meaningful gains in efficiency and risk management. Equally critical is AI governance: liability frameworks and regulations are evolving rapidly, and in-house counsel must stay to date with them.

Data privacy remains paramount, as more jurisdictions converge toward high standards and robust enforcement. Closely linked, cybersecurity obligations continue to expand, requiring proactive risk management across all organisations.

Finally, trade compliance demands constant vigilance — export controls, shifting tariff landscapes and increasingly stringent due diligence requirements are reshaping how companies operate across borders.

How has the role of general counsel evolved, and what are the most important attributes for the modern in-house lawyer?

The general counsel is no longer the sole repository of legal answers. I am part of an emerging generation of GCs who understand that being surrounded by stronger talent — both human and technological — is what transforms legal advice into a true competitive advantage.

This means fully understanding the business and the trends shaping it, while actively fostering a culture of curiosity, continuous learning and openness to emerging technologies within the legal team.

To me, the most important attributes for the modern in-house lawyer are humility, curiosity, self-awareness and a possibilist mindset — the conviction that complex challenges can always be approached creatively, and that the best solution has not yet been found.
