What are the key projects you have been involved in over the past twelve months?

Over the past twelve months, I have been closely involved in several strategic and high-impact technology transactions. One of the most significant was leading the negotiation of a landmark deal for the creation, deployment and implementation of an agentic GenAI platform for a Call Center. I was responsible for structuring and negotiating the legal framework for a highly novel solution, helping the business manage risk while advancing a pioneering commercial opportunity.

I also played a key role in the closing of a complex IaaS transaction involving multiple technology and cloud providers. Working closely with leadership, I provided legal support on a range of critical issues and helped align the contractual structure with the broader business strategy. In both matters, my role was to enable innovation, protect the company’s position and support the successful execution of high-value, business-critical deals.

What these projects reflect is the role I have sought to play as a business-oriented legal leader: someone who does not simply identify risk, but who helps unlock opportunity, enable innovation and support strategic growth. My impact has been strongest where legal complexity sits at the center of business ambition — and where sound judgment, commercial understanding and trusted leadership are essential to getting transformative deals done.

Can you describe an instance where your legal advice directly influenced business strategy or commercial objectives?

A notable example is my work on complex cloud computing and GenAI transactions, where legal advice was integral to the commercial strategy. I advised on the legal implications of cloud-based service offerings, which directly positively impacted pricing, deal structuring and competitiveness. I also supported the business in developing the contractual framework for GenAI solutions, particularly in relation to intellectual property, liability allocation, warranties and limitations of liability.

By translating complex legal issues into practical, business-oriented solutions, I worked closely with business and deal leadership to structure offerings, define negotiation positions and create contractual frameworks that protected the company while supporting innovation and growth. This advice directly influenced how opportunities were taken to market, how risk was allocated and how strategically important deals were advanced. In that sense, my role was not only to safeguard the business from legal exposure, but also to help unlock commercially viable paths forward in high-value, cutting-edge transactions. My advice directly influenced how these opportunities were positioned, negotiated and advanced.

How has the role of general counsel evolved, and what are the most important attributes for the modern in-house lawyer?

The role of general counsel has evolved significantly from that of a traditional legal adviser to that of a strategic business partner. Today, general counsels are expected not only to protect the organisation, but also to help shape transactions, enable growth, strengthen governance and support commercially important decisions through well-managed and appropriately mitigated risk. A key part of that role is remaining closely attuned to regulatory and legal developments, understanding how those changes may affect the business and helping the organisation respond in a proactive and responsible way.

For the modern in-house lawyer, the most important attributes are sound judgment, commercial acumen and the ability to communicate with clarity and influence. Being proactive is essential, as is the ability to anticipate risk, identify regulatory change early and translate complex legal issues into practical business solutions. Strong values, integrity and effective negotiation skills remain fundamental, particularly in an environment where legal teams are increasingly expected to balance innovation, growth and governance at the same time.

How can in-house counsel use AI to improve efficiency while maintaining quality, governance and integrity within legal teams?

In-house counsel can use AI to transform the way legal teams deliver value by streamlining routine work, accelerating document review, enhancing knowledge management, and enabling faster, more informed decision-making. Used effectively, AI allows legal functions to operate with greater efficiency and consistency, while freeing lawyers to focus on strategic matters where judgment, negotiation and business insight are most critical.

At the same time, the responsible adoption of AI within legal teams depends on a strong framework of governance, human oversight and ethical discipline. Quality and integrity must remain central, which means AI should be deployed with clear internal policies, robust review protocols, data protection safeguards and a clear understanding of its limitations. Looking ahead, the most effective legal teams will be those that embrace AI not as a substitute for legal judgment, but as a powerful enabler of better, faster and more scalable legal support — always grounded in accountability, trust, and professional responsibility.

How can general counsel help drive responsible governance and ethical decision-making across an organisation?

General counsel play a critical role in driving responsible governance and ethical decision-making by helping to embed integrity into the organisation’s day-to-day operations, strategic decisions and corporate culture. This goes beyond ensuring legal compliance; it involves setting clear standards, strengthening internal policies and controls and helping leadership navigate complex decisions with a strong ethical framework.

A key part of the role is to provide practical, independent judgment — particularly where legal, commercial and reputational considerations intersect. By remaining close to the business, general counsel can identify emerging risks early, promote accountability and support decision-making that is not only legally sound, but also aligned with the organisation’s values and long-term sustainability.
