Based on your experiences in the past year, are there any trends in the legal or business world that you are keeping an eye on that you think other in-house lawyers should be mindful of?
Based on my experience over the past year, one concept that deserves greater attention from in-house lawyers is Legal Resilience. Over the last several years, Bolivia has experienced multiple disruptions, ranging from the COVID-19 pandemic to periods of significant social, economic and logistical instability. These events have demonstrated that legal departments must be prepared not only to ensure compliance, but also to help organisations remain operational under adverse conditions.
As a result, our legal team has closely followed and developed the concept of Legal Resilience: the ability to learn from previous crises, anticipate legal and operational risks, strengthen governance processes, and support business continuity while maintaining compliance and ethical standards.
In my view, resilience is becoming an increasingly important capability for legal departments worldwide. Organisations are facing a growing number of disruptions, including geopolitical tensions, supply chain interruptions, regulatory changes, cybersecurity threats and social instability. In this environment, legal teams that can transform lessons learned into stronger governance frameworks and more agile decision-making processes will create significant value for their businesses.
Looking forward, what trends do you foresee in the legal landscape over the next 5–10 years that companies should prepare for?
Over the next five to ten years, companies will face an increasingly challenging environment shaped by artificial intelligence, cybercrime, disinformation, data protection, sustainability, and growing public scrutiny of corporate conduct.
In this context, Legal Departments will assume an increasingly strategic role as custodians of corporate governance, regulatory compliance, ethics, organisational integrity, and business resilience in the face of high uncertainty. At the same time, Ethics Committees will become even more relevant as mechanisms for prevention, transparency, and accountability, helping to foster values-driven corporate cultures.
Organisations that successfully integrate high standards of legal compliance, effective governance, ethical culture, and adaptability will be better positioned to protect stakeholder trust, strengthen their social legitimacy, and generate sustainable long-term value.
