Career
Phillip began his legal career as a criminal barrister prosecuting and defending in the higher and lower courts.
He then joined the government legal service where he was a legal adviser to the Intellectual Property Office between 2003 and 2007 during which time he implemented various Treaties and Directives and he also drafted a lot of intellectual property legislation, including the Registered Designs Rules 2006 and the Patents Rules 2007.
He returned to private practice in 2007 and subsequently entered academia. He is currently a (full) Professor of Law at King’s College London and his reputation has led him to be invited around the world to speak on intellectual property law, and to appear on the BBC, ITV, RTE and Times Radio discussing legal matters as well as being quoted in the New York Time and the Washington Post.
Phillip has been an Appointed Person hearing appeals from the registry under the Trade Marks Act 1994 and the Registered Designs Act 1949 since 2015, and he is also on the WIPO List of Neutrals.
