General

Alex Benn defends people accused of crimes.

In the last year, Alex has appeared on behalf of those charged with serious offences, including causing death by dangerous driving, causing grievous bodily harm with intent to do so, armed robbery, rape and fraud by abuse of position.

Alex first appeared as leading counsel at four years’ call. Alex also appears as sole or led counsel. Recent clients in cases of legal significance or featured in the national press include:

• the claimant in the first—and, to date, the only—judicial review claim about bail appeals to succeed (R (Molina) v Snaresbrook Crown Court [2024] EWHC 816 (Admin); reported [2024] WLR 183);
• the 90-year-old defendant who was discharged without conditions after inadvertently killing an 85-year-old (Daily Mail); and
• the defendant who received a fine of £100 for throwing an egg at Charles III (BBC News).

Academic and Advisory Work

Alex graduated first in their year at the University of Oxford, winning eight university-wide examination prizes. Alongside practice, Alex is now an academic at Oxford, specialising in criminal law, discrimination law and related topics. Alex teaches law at University College, St Catherine’s College and the Oxford Law Faculty.

With this profile, Alex is often asked to advise in cases that raise difficult points of law or where the criminal law meets other areas of the law. In recent years, Alex has advised individuals, trade unions and other organisations about issues surrounding the criminal law.

Alex usually uses they/them pronouns and, when necessary, the pre-fix, ‘Mx’.
