Career

Gerard's main areas of practice are Personal InjuryMedical Malpractice and Employment Law at all levels, although he maintains a diverse practice across the Common Law and Commercial fields. Gerard acts for both Claimants and Defendants.

He represents clients with a vast range of injuries arising from negligence, including medical malpractice and road traffic accidents. The majority of his caseload involves catastrophic personal injury such as spinal cord injury and brain injury, and he has over thirty years’ experience of the same.

He is consistently ranked highly in the two major legal directories, including recognition as a Star Individual for many years in Chambers & Partners. He is also a Vice-President of the Spinal Injuries Association

. He has a particular expertise in cross-border claims and is admitted as an Attorney at the New York Bar (non-practising). He has been involved in the affairs of the American Bar Association for more than 35 years and has outstanding connections with Attorneys across the US. He is also a former President of the American Counsel Association and former Leader of the European Circuit of the Bar. In addition, and in recognition of his long time involvement with the American Bar Association, Gerard was the first recipient of a Presidential Citation in 2015 and currently co-chairs the International Litigation Committee of the same.

He is happy to accept instructions either through Outer Temple Chambers or Kings Chambers.

He also has his own company which is registered as a BSB entity, McDermott KC Law (a trading name of Gerard McDermott KC Ltd). He is happy to accept instructions through that company, including on a direct access basis. In addition to his advocacy practice, he is a qualified mediator and happy to accept instructions to mediate in any appropriate case.
