Position
Alex is a Managing Associate in the life sciences team at Mathys & Squire after completing a PhD and postdoctoral research fellowship. He has experience in European prosecution, opposition and appeal work, supplementary protection certificates, as well as in the management of European patent portfolios.
Career
Alex handles a mix of EPO prosecution and opposition work in the life sciences sector. Areas of particular expertise include CAR T cells, antibodies, vaccines, gene editing, and viral vectors.
Alex handles a range of prosecution matters, including coordination of the largest CAR T cell docket in Europe. He has been involved in several EPO oppositions, both offensive and defensive, and has attended and contributed to hearings before EPO tribunals. He has also coordinated SPC portfolios across Europe, and assisted with the development of arguments in complex SPC prosecution cases.
Memberships
Alex is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) and a member of the European Patent Institute (EPI).
Education
Having graduated with a master’s degree in natural sciences, specialising in biochemistry, from the University of Cambridge, Alex went on to do a PhD at Queen Mary University which focused on understanding the role of polycomb group epigenetic regulators in liver development.
He also holds a Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from the University of London.
