Career

Juan Carlos has been a partner at Dentons Paz Horowitz since 2011 and has more than 25 years of experience advising national and international companies across highly regulated industries. His practice focuses on aviation, corporate law, mining, banking and insurance, contractual matters, and consumer protection. He regularly advises multinational corporations on strategic and regulatory matters related to the development and expansion of their operations in Ecuador.

Juan Carlos has extensive experience in the aviation sector, including participation in the negotiation of bilateral air transport agreements between Ecuador and other jurisdictions, as well as the drafting of regulations applicable to commercial aviation. He has also advised several international airlines on entering and commencing operations in Ecuador, contributing to increased connectivity and industry growth. In the mining sector, he has advised on project acquisitions, mining rights and negotiations with state entities and regulators.

His banking and insurance practice includes advising on fintech, crypto-assets, big data and investment fund structures. In addition, he served as professor of Aviation Law and Consumer Protection Law at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito for more than 15 years.

Education

Juan Carlos earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, an LL.M. from the University of California, Davis School of Law, and a Master’s degree in Regulated Industries Law, with a specialization in Banking and Insurance, from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. His postgraduate studies complement his practice in aviation, banking and insurance, mining, fintech and other highly regulated sectors.
