Career

Carolina Mendes joined Licks Attorneys’ Rio de Janeiro office as a paralegal in 2017 and became an attorney at law in 2020, and became a partner in 2025. Her practice focuses on complex litigation in intellectual property law, with particular focus patent infringement and validity disputes.  Having experience at trial and appellate level in lawsuits involving the pharmaceutical products, medical devices, computer systems, telecommunications, and other industries, Ms. Mendes advises multinational clients in cross-border intellectual property disputes. She has also experience with administrative proceedings before government agencies, such as the BRPTO.

Affiliated with the German Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (GRUR), Ms. Mendes has played an active role in recent years in fostering commercial relations between German and Brazilian companies.

In addition to her legal practice, Ms. Mendes holds a PhD (2024) and a Master’s Degree (2022) in Procedural Law, both from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), where she is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Procedural Law.

Ms. Mendes currently serves as Vice President of the Special Committee on Federal Justice of the Brazilian Bar Association – Rio de Janeiro Section (OAB/RJ) and is also a member of its Civil Procedure Studies Committee and the Committee on Copyright, Intangible Rights, and Entertainment Law.

In 2022, Ms. Mendes was featured as a speaker on panels concerning online hearings both at the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB/RJ) and the Rio de Janeiro State Attorney’s Office (PGE-RJ). In 2024, Ms. Mendes was featured as a speaker on the IP & Patent Summit, in Berlin, where she provided an overview of Brazil's patent and judicial systems, highlighting their predictability and reliability for German companies seeking to assert patent rights.
