Career
Liberty McAteer is a partner in the Firm’s Technology, Intellectual Property and AI & Data Law groups. A distinctive feature of Liberty’s practice is that he combines his experience as a software developer, in-house counsel, and law firm partner to advise clients on the opportunities and risks they face. This includes first-hand experience in the operational and commercial impacts of legal decisions on day-to-day business practices, ranging from sales strategy and revenue recognition to the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
Liberty's experience covers enterprise software development and licensing, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, cloud products, mobile software, supply chains, open-source software, X-as-a-Service and IT and Business Process Outsourcing. He also handles cybersecurity and privacy law compliance, breach response, product rollouts and product documentation, API agreements, SLAs, VAR and MSP programs, intellectual property protection, and outside general counsel services in a range of industries. His software representation covers FinTech, EdTech, digital health, eCommerce, social media, audiovisual media-sharing, eDiscovery and other areas. In addition, on the hardware and firmware side, Liberty has negotiated agreements for worldwide supply chains with logistics providers and contract manufacturers, and developed and implemented complex frameworks for product-related risk mitigation and sales strategy.
For corporate matters, Liberty has represented clients through the entire business lifecycle, from startup, formation and financing through exit. He has negotiated numerous funding rounds, complex credit facilities, financing transactions and company sales in industries ranging from energy production to logistics, financial services, consumer packaged goods, advertising agencies, media planning, online publications and SaaS providers, among others.
Liberty was the Senior Deputy General Counsel to a Silicon Valley-based cleantech company, which manufactured and deployed megawatt-hours of battery-integrated electric vehicle charging stations, and in-house counsel to a group of software startups, all of which employed Agile methodology and Test-Driven Design (TDD).
Liberty received his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School with a full merit scholarship where he focused on intellectual property and graduated cum laude with a certificate in IP, Media, and Information Law. He received his B.A. as a triple major in math, physics and philosophy at Wesleyan University, graduating with honors. Liberty is also an active coder, now working primarily in JavaScript (Node).
