James Martin advises technology companies, nonprofit organizations, entrepreneurs, and creative businesses on protecting, enforcing, and commercializing their intellectual property. Drawing on more than 30 years of experience—and a background in engineering and industry—James delivers practical, business-focused strategies that help clients turn innovation into competitive advantage while managing risk in a fast-changing global marketplace.

As Chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group, James translates complex technology into clear legal frameworks, negotiates high-value transactions, and leads litigation teams to efficient, business-aligned outcomes. His practice spans technology transactions and counseling, intellectual property litigation, portfolio strategy, and industry-specific engagements across software and semiconductors, industrial and construction technologies, consumer products, financial services, life sciences, nonprofit foundations, and the arts. Prior to practicing law, James worked for Hewlett-Packard and IBM, giving him firsthand insight into how technology businesses operate and what they need from legal counsel.
