Joaquin “Jack” Terceño is a Senior Partner in the firm’s International Arbitration Group and is based in London. He previously headed Freshfields’ disputes team in Japan and co-lead its Asia arbitration practice, and began his career with Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton in New York and London. He has conducted commercial and investor-State treaty arbitrations under the rules of every major arbitral institution, including LCIA, ICC, SIAC, AAA, UNCITRAL, and ICSID. His practice spans a range of sectors, including energy, mineral resources, technology, financing, and infrastructure. He has represented clients in disputes related to oil exploration rights in West Africa, renewable energy projects in western Europe, rights to an African iron ore mine, ownership of a coal mining operation in eastern Europe, LNG pricing in Asia, and a gas pipeline in the Middle East, as well as software development and cryptocurrency disputes. Jack has represented investors in treaty arbitrations, and also has represented States and State-owned entities. He also has provided legislative advice to State governments in Asia, Africa, and Europe. In 2023, he was named the Dispute Resolution Lawyer of the Year for Japan by the Asia Business Law Journal.
