Jared Newton is partner in Quinn Emanuel’s Wilmington, Delaware and Washington, D.C. offices. He leads the firm’s intellectual property practice in Delaware, handling all manner of patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret disputes before the United States District Court for the District of Delaware and the Delaware State Courts. Jared joined the firm in 2011, as a founding member of our Washington, DC office and industry-leading Section 337 practice before the United States International Trade Commission.
A former United States Patent Examiner, Jared brings a deep understanding of patent law to his litigation practice. He has taken dozens of patent cases to trial, securing verdicts and final judgments for clients on both sides of the “v.” In addition to his trial work, Jared routinely argues appeals to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and represents clients in post-grant review proceedings before the United States Patent & Trademark Office.
In the trade secret arena, Jared represents plaintiffs and defendants in high-profile disputes arising under the Federal Defend Trade Secrets Act and state trade secret laws. In 2018, he represented Waymo against Uber in a landmark trade secret trial related to autonomous-vehicle technology. The case settled mid-trial, with Waymo receiving Uber equity then valued at $245 million. Jared’s trade secret practice spans a range of technologies, from artificial intelligence to medical devices to jet engines. Jared also frequently advises clients on pre-litigation best practices for safeguarding trade secrets and protecting against claims of misappropriation.
Jared has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech and received his Juris Doctor from the George Washington University School of Law.
