Position
Gustavo Fernandes serves as the head of the Litigation practice group in Brazil and is the co-head of Mayer Brown’s Latin American International Arbitration practice group.
Career
Gustavo Fernandes acts as lead counsel in domestic and international proceedings under the rules of major arbitration institutions such as ICC, LCIA, CAM-CCBC, CIESP/FIESP, FGV, CAMARB, and CBMA, as well as in ad hoc proceedings under UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. He represents clients in complex court disputes before Brazilian federal and state courts.
Trained in civil and common law, Gustavo handles commercial and corporate disputes across sectors like energy, engineering, construction, mining, and telecommunications. He advises on arbitration-related lawsuits, including recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards before Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice.
Gustavo serves as an arbitrator in Brazil’s major arbitration chambers and as a CAMARB board member. He co-coordinates the Brazilian Arbitration Committee’s study group and often speaks on arbitration involving state entities and foreign investments.
