João Cople is a partner in the Dispute Resolution practice of Tauil & Chequer Advogados in association with Mayer Brown.

Career

João Cople has more than 18 years of experience in strategic litigation. In addition to his work in complex contractual and regulatory disputes, João Cople has a multidisciplinary profile, with participation in administrative, tax, electoral, insurance, social security, and arbitration disputes.

João handles significant cases involving large international companies. He represented a major global energy company in a dispute over payments owed by a local distributor for electricity supply, a Turkish energy transition leader in legal actions against CCEE regarding penalties and contract terminations, a Chinese energy company and supplier of chemical products and petroleum derivatives in proposed action against Petrobras, a supplier of offshore drilling units in a case against Petrobras for early termination of charter agreements valued at R$1.9 billion, an offshore drilling company with its Dutch parent in a lawsuit to suspend Petrobras' termination of contracts worth R$1.1 billion and more.

In his academic training, João had the opportunity of working at the Federal Attorney’s Office, at the State Attorney’s Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro and at the District Attorney’s Office of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, as trainee and assistant.
