Managing Partner - Costa Rica

Alonso Vargas has served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Costa Rica, giving him in-depth knowledge in the handling of Civil, Commercial, Labor, and Judicial Collection proceedings. He has acted as an external advisor for judicial collections for several state entities, including the National Learning Institute, the Municipality of Montes de Oca, the Municipality of San José, and Banco Popular, and he currently advises Banco Nacional de Costa Rica. Throughout his extensive career as a litigator, he has represented both individual clients and national and international companies.

Alonso Vargas has achieved outstanding results in complex judicial proceedings and in arbitration cases before different Chambers in Costa Rica. His vast knowledge of case law and doctrine, acquired during his judicial career, along with continuous professional development and the experience accumulated since his time as a judge, have allowed him to become a highly skilled trial lawyer. He has represented clients in diverse proceedings such as the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, Banco Industrial, Bancolombia, Concentrix, Grupo Sur, Tamarindo Diría, Coocique, Ceca, and Cemix, among others.

As part of his renowned litigation career, he has gained experience in proceedings involving the representation of foreign companies, as well as extensive experience in civil liability cases as counsel for the insurer ASSA and Grupo Roble.

On a daily basis, Alonso Vargas advises his clients on labor matters, including disciplinary actions, dismissals, severance payments, solidarism, and union-related issues. He has successfully litigated significant labor cases that have set legal precedents in Costa Rica, particularly regarding corporate liability for employee actions and compensation packages for executives of multinational companies.

He also practices Corporate, Banking, and Finance Law, advising various national and international companies, including Banco Agrícola, Bancolombia, Towerbank, Banco Industrial, Banco Itaú Panamá, Bancolombia Panamá, Bancolombia Puerto Rico, Banistmo, and Banco Agromercantil de Guatemala, thus providing financial advisory services.

He serves as board member and legal representative for clients such as Concentrix, Grupo Sur, Grupo Bancolombia, Rau, Admedes, Incensa, and Woden, among others.

In addition, he has been a lecturer and speaker at various academic forums for many years. He has also served as a professor at Universidad Latina, Universidad Autónoma de Centroamérica, Universidad Central, and Universidad Internacional de las Américas.

Born on January 14, 1972, he graduated as an Attorney-at-Law and Notary Public from Universidad Panamericana in 1996. That same year, he was admitted to the Costa Rican Bar Association, and in 1998, he was also admitted to the Directorate of Notaries of Costa Rica. In 2015, he obtained a Master’s Degree in Business Law from Universidad para la Cooperación Internacional (UCI), and in the same year he completed the Executive Diploma in Business Management for Lawyers at INCAE Business School.
