Scott Smedresman is a partner in the firm’s Transactions Practice Group and co-chair of the Global Technology group. Scott represents early- and growth-stage technology companies throughout their lifecycles, and represents lead venture and private equity investors in pre-seed through pre-IPO investments.

Scott has served as general outside counsel to hundreds of high-growth tech startups throughout their full lifecycles—from formation, founder issuances, venture financings, IP strategy, developing and launching products, building customers and scale, acquiring technology assets, and ultimately through exit. Scott and the Brown Rudnick team have handled hundreds of venture capital financings throughout the maturity cycles of venture backed businesses.

In his fund practice, Scott represents investors in forming and deploying investment funds focused on high growth investments, including venture funds, late-stage pre-IPO venture investments, as well as university and other institutional investors. Scott leads deals for investors ranging from $1 million SAFE and pre-seed investments, through $100 million+ financings at valuations of $1 billion and up.

In addition to investment work, Scott works with startups as they scale, often on complex technology deployment and licensing deals. In this practice, Scott routinely negotiates strategic partnerships, integrations and software development and licensing agreements with some of the most prominent companies in the world. Recent software deals on behalf of startups have included representing vendors in deals with Google, General Electric, Uber, Novartis, Biogen, Microsoft, LinkedIn, AirBNB, Twitter, Fidelity, Facebook, Roche, NBCUniversal, McDonalds, National Football League, IBM, U.S. government software procurement, and Starbucks, among many more Fortune 500 companies.

In addition to direct client representation, Scott works on policy and industry activities in the technology community, including through advocacy groups including the Application Developers Alliance, and government development programs, including Global Affairs Canada, Austrade, and Enterprise Singapore. Scott works in a mentorship and educator capacity with accelerators and academic programs, including Columbia Business School, the MIT delta v Lab, NYU Stern, Yale Tsai CITY, Cornell Tech, Harvard, INSEAD, and Venture for America and the VFA Accelerator, among others.
