Career

Joseph P. Anderson III is a member of the Mechanical Technologies (including Medical Device and Ornamental Design) Team in the firm's Patents Group. Joe has widespread experience in preparing, filing, and prosecuting utility and design patent applications, both domestically and internationally, in the industrial, consumer product, and medical device technology sectors. He has particular experience in advising clients on infringement risks and design changes in advance of large-scale product launches. Joe has unique design patent experience that allows him to quickly identify comprehensive filing strategies that maximize the commercial value of industrial designs. Joe also has extensive experience in opinion preparation, client counseling, patent portfolio analysis, and due diligence in support of transactions involving patent rights. Additionally, Joe regularly assists with Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) proceedings at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, having served as back-up counsel in nearly 20 Inter Partes Review proceedings for various technologies.

Joe's representative industrial technologies include drilling systems and methods, downhole instrumentation, pipe couplings, sprinkler heads, valves, flooring products, artificial turf, water purification systems, firearms, packaging systems and methods, manufacturing equipment, agricultural equipment, automation, conveyor systems, delivery vehicles, user interfaces, and modular buildings. His representative medical technologies include catheters, surgical systems and tools, electrode arrays, prosthetics, implants, tissue products, heart valves, medical imaging devices, orthopedics, orthodontics, ophthalmological treatment devices, artificial lungs, wheelchairs, spinal stimulation devices, and patient support devices. Joe's representative consumer products technologies include clothing, underwear, footwear, swimwear, headwear, bottles, cups, product packaging, bags, luggage, jewelry, musical instruments, picture frames, at-home training devices, power adapters, yard tools and equipment, and golf clubs.
