Position
Joy Tan is the Co-Head of the Commercial & Corporate Disputes Practice, the Corporate Governance & Compliance Practice and the Financial Services Regulatory Practice. She also leads the Corporate & Regulatory Investigations Practice.
Career
Her main practice areas are banking, corporate and commercial dispute resolution, and contentious investigations. She also regularly advises on corporate governance and financial services regulatory matters under the Companies Act, Securities and Futures Act and other regulatory statutes, including in relation to corporate fraud, anti-money laundering issues and market misconduct.
Joy is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, sits on the Panel of Arbitrators of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), and is also a Panel Member of The Law Society Disciplinary Tribunals appointed by The Honourable Chief Justice under the Legal Profession Act. She also sits on the Singapore Chapter board of the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists and chairs the Appeals Board of the Council of Estate Agencies. Joy was previously a member of the 1999 Rules of Court Working Party (subcommittee of the Law Reform Committee) and the Singapore Association of Women Lawyers. Joy is on the Governing Council of the Singapore Institute of Directors (SID) and is also ranked as a Senior Accredited Board Director by SID. She serves as an independent director on multiple boards, both for-profit and non-profit.
Recognised amongst the best in her field, Joy was awarded "White Collar Crime Lawyer of the Year" at the Euromoney Women in Business Law Asia Awards. She was also listed as one of the Top 30 Corporate Governance lawyers in Singapore by Expert Guides: Best of the Best and is recognised as a Global Leader for Asset Recovery in Lexology Index and as a Global Elite Thought Leader in Investigations in Lexology Index - Global Elite. Joy has been named in Global Investigations Review’s (GIR) Women in Investigations 2025 list which recognises 100 outstanding women shaping the global landscape of white-collar crime and investigations
Since 2018, Joy has been consistently recognised for her work in Corporate Investigations/ Anti-Corruption by Chambers Asia Pacific – Asia Pacific's Leading Lawyers for Business. She is commended as "very capable, specialised and pleasant to work with" and “extremely efficient and extremely intelligent”.
Joy has been a recommended lawyer in The Legal 500: Asia Pacific – The Client's Guide to the Asia Pacific Legal Profession for her expertise in White-Collar Crime in Singapore since 2017. Recognised as a "Litigation Star" and "Top 100 Women in Litigation – Asia Pacific" by Benchmark Litigation, Joy is also listed in the Best Lawyers for her expertise in the areas of Arbitration and Mediation, Corporate Governance and Compliance Practice and; Litigation.
Joy graduated with First Class Honours from Cambridge University. In 1992, she was awarded the UK Council of Legal Education Prize at the Non-Vocational Bar Exam. Joy is admitted to both the English Bar and the Singapore Bar. She joined the Singapore Legal Service as a Justices' Law Clerk with the Singapore Supreme Court before entering private practice.
