Career
Joel is an associate director in the firm’s Dispute Resolution practice group, with a focus in complex civil and commercial disputes both in litigation and arbitration.
Joel has represented clients both at the Singapore Supreme and State Courts levels, as well as before arbitral tribunals under the auspices of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre. Having co-authored a number of academic publications on private international law which have been cited with approval by the Singapore High Court, Joel is interested in and familiar with issues typically encountered in cross-border disputes.
Joel also has experience advising and representing private clients in criminal matters for various offences, including that under the Penal Code, Road Traffic Act, Employment of Foreign Manpower Act and Misuse of Drugs Act.
As a student, Joel graduated second in his cohort from Temasek Polytechnic with a diploma with merit in Law and Management. He was later awarded the NUS Undergraduate (Merit) Scholarship to read Law at the National University of Singapore. He graduated with a Second Class Honours (Upper). Apart from winning book prize and being placed on the Dean’s List, Joel was also awarded the NUS Pro Bono Leadership Award for his time and effort dedicated to pro bono causes.
Joel is a regular co-author of the chapter “Conflict of Laws” with the Singapore Academy of Law Annual Review of Singapore Cases (“SAcLJ”). This is an annual conspectus that encapsulates and evaluates decisions of the Singapore courts by leading practitioners and academics. His publications have been referred to in local and foreign academic journals, and cited with approval by the Singapore High Court.
