Randy Schoen, Ph.D. is a partner in Thomas Horstemeyer’s patent prosecution group. Randy represents clients in the filing and prosecution of a wide range of national and international intellectual property applications including patents, trademarks, and copyrights. He also assists clients with trade secrets, licensing, due diligence, and intellectual property strategy. He has experience representing individual, university, and corporate clients in a wide range of intellectual property areas.

Randy’s practice involves preparing and prosecuting patent applications across electrical, software, mechanical, and process related fields. He also assists in the filing of trademark and copyright applications. He has worked with clients from individual inventors to large corporations to secure US and international protection. Randy manages multiple university clients, including the University of Arizona, Ohio State Innovation Foundation, University of Massachusetts, University of Illinois Chicago, NC State University, and more.

After serving aboard a nuclear submarine in the U.S. Navy, Randy graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering (1989), Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering (1990), and a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering (1994) with concentrations in Electrical Power and Control Systems, where he was a recipient of a President’s Fellowship and a Schlumberger Foundation Fellowship. His doctoral research involved the use of neural networks in machine learning for fault prediction in rotating electrical machinery. Prior to attending law school, Randy worked as a design and development engineer for The Louis Allis Company and as an engineering manager and Executive Vice President for Loher Drive Systems, Inc.

Randy received his law degree from the Georgia State University College of Law in 2007, where he was a recipient of an Intellectual Property Scholarship, an ABA/BNA Award for Excellence in the Study of Intellectual Property Law, and an Honors in Litigation award.
