Professional Overview 

Christopher Kelman is the Managing Partner of MF&G and a senior civil litigator with over 26 years’ experience, including nine years as Head of the Litigation Department. He is widely regarded as one of Jamaica’s leading courtroom advocates, with extensive appearances before the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. 

Practice Focus 

Civil and commercial litigation, public law, appellate advocacy, medical negligence, banking and financial services disputes. 

Key Experience & Matters 

  • Successfully represented Sagicor Bank Jamaica Ltd. before the Court of Appeal in overturning a refusal of summary judgment (Sagicor Bank Jamaica Ltd. v Harley Corporation).
    • Defended Andrews Memorial Hospital in appellate proceedings confirming that revocation of clinical privileges under contract was not subject to judicial review.
    • Successfully defended the University of the West Indies in constitutional proceedings where alternative remedies were available.
    • Secured landmark admiralty rulings on behalf of vessel owners in Southern Recycling LLC v Avra Towage BV, establishing principles governing release from arrest.
    • Successfully defended multiple medical negligence and wrongful dismissal claims, including for the University Hospital of the West Indies.

  • Regularly entrusted with high-stakes litigation involving public bodies, financialinstitutionsand regulated entities.
    • Frequently involved in matters shaping Jamaican jurisprudence at appellate level.
