Career
Kobie is a trial lawyer with more than twenty-five years of experience representing clients in high-stakes criminal and civil matters. He has litigated cases in federal and state courts across the country, as well as before military commissions at Guantanamo Bay. His work spans investigations, litigation, and trials. He also teaches trial lawyering to lawyers nationwide.
Kobie began his career in the U.S. Department of Justice through the Attorney General’s Honors Program, where he served as a civil rights prosecutor in the Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division. He specialized in prosecuting police brutality cases—some of the most challenging cases to prosecute—where he maintained a perfect trial record.
He then served as an Assistant Federal Public Defender in Maryland, where he represented individuals facing federal prosecution. There, he won two-thirds of his trials and obtained favorable pre-trial results (including dismissals) when trial was not in his client's interests.
Kobie is a founding partner of Flowers Keller LLP, where his practice reflects a lifelong commitment to ending Mass Incarceration. His track record includes successfully trying the largest prosecution of federal correctional officers in the history of the Civil Rights Division and settling the largest wrongful conviction case in U.S. history. —a case which was made into the critically acclaimed HBO documentery When a Witness Recants. This history of fighting to end Mass Incarceration is what Kobie brings to his representation of the wrongly accused and the wrongly convicted.
