He is also a Director of MacRoberts Trustees Limited, which provides independent trustee services.

James is a member of the Association of Pension Lawyers (APL) and has been elected as the Secretary of its Scottish Group and is also a member of the APL’s Public Sector Pensions Sub Committee. He is also a member of The Law Society of Scotland's Pension Law Sub-Committee. James co-authored the Scottish section of Tolley’s Pensions Law a major UK legal textbook with Martyn Shaw (December 2022).

James is ranked as a Leader in the Field for Employee Share Schemes & Incentives and Pensions in the 2024 edition of Chambers UK Guide to the Legal Profession.
