In 1993, Jean-François obtained a special licence in Maritime Science from the University of Antwerp and participated in the Maritime Law Short Course at the University of Southampton.

He also obtained a Master of Laws in Commercial Law (option: Shipping Law) from the University of Cape Town in 1995.
