Position

Valeen Sodhi is a summer student at Heer Law. She supports the firm’s lawyers and agents on intellectual property research, client matters and legal writing.

Valeen has a background in computer science and a particular interest in the interaction between intellectual property, emerging technologies and business strategy. Her areas of interest include artificial intelligence, privacy, data governance and the legal risks created by rapidly developing technologies.

Her previous client-facing experience in graphic design and commercial printing provides her with practical insight into branding, design and the operational considerations faced by businesses. She is interested in helping clients understand how intellectual property can support growth while addressing legal and commercial risks.

Career

Valeen is pursuing her Juris Doctor at the University of Ottawa, where she has concentrated on law and technology courses with a particular interest in intellectual property.

During law school, Valeen has participated in competitive mooting and was selected as a Writing Leader, through which she mentors other law students in professional legal writing. She also serves as a second-year representative of the University of Ottawa Law and Technology Student Society, supporting programming and outreach concerning intellectual property, artificial intelligence, privacy, data governance and other emerging technology-law issues.

Before law school, Valeen worked with businesses in a client-facing capacity, supporting their graphic-design, branding and commercial-printing requirements.

Valeen graduated with distinction from Concordia University with a degree in Computer Science, majoring in Computer Applications and minoring in Law and Society. Her technical training provides a foundation in computing and systems thinking that informs her interest in innovation and technology law.
