Julio has over 20 years of experience as a trial and litigation attorney. He has established himself as a trusted lawyer on whom many companies and industries rely when facing delicate matters involving urgent timelines and significant reputational exposure. He is recognized for managing critical, high-risk situations for his clients. He currently leads a specialized team of attorneys available to clients 24/7. For more than two decades, his practice has been distinguished by providing clients with tailored, flexible, pragmatic, and efficient solutions. He has served as lead negotiator in a number of complex cases, steering discussions and agreements in particularly sensitive contexts. He is an expert in corporate strategic litigation and has acted as lead counsel in numerous high-impact criminal proceedings involving tax, environmental, and customs matters, as well as other related areas. He also currently advises several companies that positively transform the daily lives of Guatemalans, including those in the hospital and healthcare, education, energy, mining, hydrocarbons, banking, telecommunications, and agribusiness sectors. In the pharmaceutical sector, he has secured significant convictions against organized criminal groups operating clandestine laboratories dedicated to manufacturing counterfeit products.

He also served as a professor at Universidad Francisco Marroquín for more than 15 years, teaching Criminal Procedure. He continues to contribute to legal education by designing and delivering workshops for students who have completed their coursework, with the purpose of preparing them for the criminal law portion of the professional technical examination.

Julio Roberto García-Merlos holds a diverse and comprehensive educational background in law, finance, and international business.

He earned his law degree as Abogado y Notario from Universidad Francisco Marroquín, one of Guatemala’s most prestigious universities, where he developed a solid foundation in legal practice.

He continued his education with a Master’s in Finance and Taxation from Universidad Francisco Marroquín, specializing in tax law and financial matters, which has been instrumental in his white-collar criminal defense work and advisory roles for multinational corporations.

Additionally, Julio completed a Postgraduate degree in International Business at Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, further enhancing his expertise in global business practices, allowing him to provide cross-border legal advice and navigate complex international legal frameworks.
