Career

Ian trained with Hill Dickinson and qualified in 1999, becoming a Partner in 2003. He has worked throughout that time within the firm’s health department, specialising in health-based litigation. He has lectured widely to NHS clients on clinical negligence, EL/PL and other topics. He has over 25 years’ experience in running complex, high value claims, including cerebral palsy / brain damage and serious spinal damage. He has concluded numerous multi-million pound settlements involving Periodical Payments. Alternative dispute resolution is undertaken in the majority of high value cases which have settled, including resolution by way of mediation.

Nominated as ‘key personnel’ for clinical negligence and non-clinical (EL/PL etc) claims for NHS Resolution.

Notable cases:

Acted for the Defendant in the Court of Appeal decision clarifying causation in the clinical negligence claim of Gouldsmith -v-Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust Successfully defended the cerebral palsy claim of Cox -v-Secretary of State for Health at trial in the High Court Instructed by NHS Resolution in relation to several cases concerning patients who killed family members whilst under the care of mental health and GP services.
