Position

Liz Barrett is an Associate in the Family Law department at Vardags, advising on the full spectrum of private family law matters. She is prized for her strategic thinking, meticulous attention to detail, holistic and empathetic approach to client care. Legal 500 has described her as “very hardworking and conscientious, and it pays significant dividends".

Liz’s clients include high-profile and high-net-worth business owners, sports personalities, landowners, royalty, entrepreneurs, and their spouses, acting for them in highly complex and emotionally charged disputes. While she is based in London, she has clients world-wide and regularly provides strategic English law advice on overseas family law issues. 

Her practice includes divorce and dissolution of civil partnerships; jurisdictional disputes and international family law issues; financial remedy proceedings, including unmarried parents, cases involving trusts, offshore assets, and opaque company structures; private law children matters, including safeguarding and relocation; surrogacy, adoption, and modern family issues; and drafting and advising on UK and overseas pre- and post-nuptial agreements, and cohabitation disputes. 

Career

Liz has held a variety of roles throughout her legal career, culminating in her appointment as Associate at Vardags in 2024. She has represented clients in the Family Court, High Court and through alternative dispute resolution, working on various reported cases. 

Liz has also provided pro bono advice to victims of image-based sexual abuse, immigration and human rights issues, and B Corporation legal certification. 

Liz has contributed several articles for Vardags and her previous Firm, appeared on panels providing legal guidance and advice on issues such as surrogacy and spoken on podcasts guiding aspiring lawyers.

Liz is a member of Resolution which is an organisation that believes in a constructive, non-confrontational approach to family law matters. 

Education

Liz studied Law at King’s College London, being awarded both the Dickson Poon Scholarship and the Jelf Medal during her degree. She then studied the Legal Practice Course at BPP University achieving a distinction. 

Leisure

Liz is a keen advocate for social mobility in law and helping people to achieve their potential, irrespective of their background. She is interested in open-water swimming, cycling, hiking, going to gigs, cooking, eating new foods, reading, and travelling to remote areas of the world.
