Career
Sofia Martins is a head of practice Partner and Member of the Executive Committee at Miranda & Associados with more than 20 years of experience, focusing her practice on complex Litigation and International Arbitration. She is widely recognised for her deep technical expertise, extensive academic involvement, and long-standing participation in leading arbitration institutions.
She is actively involved in the international arbitration community, having served on the Board of Directors of the Portuguese Arbitration Association, as Co‑Chair of the APA Sub‑40, and as Co‑Chair of the CEA‑40. She has also been a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR since 2015 and of the Board of the Arbitration Centre of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Sofia is a frequent speaker at major international conferences, where she has addressed topics such as document production in arbitration, the role of arbitral institutions, comparative perspectives on Portuguese‑speaking jurisdictions, ethical issues in multicultural arbitration, appointment criteria for arbitrators, and the impact of professional rules on arbitration practice.
She is also the author and co‑author of numerous articles and book chapters on arbitration, interim measures, fast-track rules, state‑court interaction with arbitration, and the development of arbitration laws in Portugal and Spain.
With over two decades dedicated to complex dispute resolution and international arbitration, Sofia is regarded as a leading practitioner whose work bridges rigorous legal analysis, academic contribution, and active engagement in shaping arbitration practice both in Portugal and internationally.
