Position

Matthias Gstoehl is a Partner in Schellenberg Wittmer’s Dispute Resolution and White Collar Crime Groups in Zurich. He has extensive experience in complex domestic and multi-jurisdictional proceedings and internal investigations, with a particular focus on white-collar crime (including corruption, fraud and money laundering), asset recovery, insolvency, international mutual assistance, sanctions and ESG litigation. Drawing on his prior front-office experience in derivatives structuring and corporate treasury solutions at leading international investment banks in London and Zurich, he is especially active in contentious banking and finance matters, and regularly advises clients in sectors such as healthcare, natural resources, sports and trusts.

Experience: 

  • Acted for a group of institutional investors representing an aggregate investment of USD 2.5bn in complex criminal and civil proceedings for the recovery of their losses in connection with a financial investment
  • Conducting a compliance investigation for a listed Swiss multinational into all of the group's joint venture partners and consultants worldwide, with a focus on sanctions and bribery risks. Based on the results of the investigation, the group decided to exit 14 relationships. Advising the group on the exit and related criminal liability, sanctions and litigation risks
  • Acting for the liquidators of a foreign bank in connection with a 500m EUR asset recovery claim
  • Acting for a private equity fund in connection with criminal proceedings against the management of one of its holdings for suspected fraud
  • Co-led a large-scale investigation into aggravated medical malpractice and fraud allegations for a leading healthcare provider
