Matei Florea has been the head of Schoenherr's firm-wide banking & finance and capital markets practice group in the CEE region since 2019. Over his 27-year tenure with the firm, Matei has been instrumental in developing Schoenherr's banking & finance practice in Romania, as well as expanding the firm's capabilities and offerings across the CEE region. In recent years, Matei's practice has focused primarily on special situations, with particular expertise in investments in distressed bank assets, contingency planning, and debt restructuring for both lenders and obligors. He also advises on complex insolvency/litigation matters involving funding and financiers and provides boardroom advice in the financial services sector. Matei advises on a wide range of bank and direct lending projects and is actively involved in major bank M&A transactions and loans portfolio sales in the Romanian and broader CEE markets. In the banking regulatory sphere, Matei's recent work includes structuring, setting up, and obtaining regulatory approvals for a variety of digitalisation and e-commerce projects, working with banks, payment service providers, and FinTech companies.
