Career

Tonio Ellul is a lawyer and partner at EMD Malta.  After obtaining his doctorate in law (LL.D.) from the University of Malta, he was called to the bar in 1994 and subsequently successfully read for a Master of Arts degree in Financial Services.

Over the past 30 years, Tonio specialised in corporate and commercial law, with a particular focus on advising clients engaged in international trade, cross-border investments, and complex commercial transactions. He regularly assists multinational corporations, SMEs, and private clients with corporate planning and regulatory matters, contract negotiation, mergers and acquisitions, and general business advisory services.

Before joining EMD Malta, Tonio held the position of in-house counsel at one of the Big Four professional services firms, where he gained extensive experience in financial services regulation, transactional structuring, and cross-disciplinary legal matters. Prior to that, he spent several years in private legal practice at one of Malta’s leading law firms, honing his expertise in both contentious and non-contentious corporate and commercial work.

Tonio has been actively involved in the development of Malta’s legal and financial services landscape. For several years, he served as a Council Member of the Institute of Financial Services Practitioners (IFSP) and played a pivotal role in the founding of the Malta branch of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), where he also served as a Council Member. These roles underscore his longstanding commitment to advancing best practices and regulatory standards in the Maltese financial services sector.

Tonio spent several years lecturing and acting as examiner in corporate and commercial law at the University of Malta, mentoring upcoming professionals and sharing insights drawn from his extensive practical experience. Additionally, he is a regular speaker at industry conferences and professional seminars, where he addresses attendees on a wide range of topics, including regulatory developments, international business structures, and trust and estate planning.

In 2022, Tonio was appointed Honorary Consul of Mexico in Malta, a diplomatic role in which he supports the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries.
