Ganado Advocates has 'an unsurpassed reputation in Malta’ for AIFMD and UCITS regulation, domestic special purpose funds and general asset and fund management matters. Dr Andre Zerafa is ‘without doubt the most outstanding lawyer in the asset management and fund industry’. Another key figure is James Farrugia, who has ‘outstanding knowledge of the regulatory field, a great practical approach and can speak the language of finance professionals’. The team approaches all matters with ‘a genuine passion and dedication to its work’. Also noted are senior associates Dr David Borg-Carbott and Dr Marina GrechDr Stephanie Farrugia  made senior associate in 2018.

Mamo TCV Advocates' investment funds practice head Katya Tua has expertise in matters such as alternative investment fund structuring, corporate governance law, general company law and MiFID and UCITS regulatory requirements. Tua advised The Macro Fund on the restructuring, winding-up and re-establishment of a set of sub-funds under an umbrella Société d'investissement à Capital Variable (SICAV). Camilleri Preziosi's team is ‘very knowledgeable’ about domestic regulation and the setting-up of investment funds. Noted for his ‘very proactive approach’, practice head Louis de Gabriele's recent work included the establishment and licensing of numerous alternative investment funds, UCITS management companies, umbrella funds and sub-funds. The group provides the full scope of advice to local and foreign investment firms, collective investment schemes and high net-worth individuals. A notable highlight involved Ghio advising a retail fund on regulatory issues arising from a suspension on the fund's dealing and its voluntary liquidation. Ghio ‘always seems to have the right solution for anything related to financial structures’. Bonnici has expertise in project restructuring, tax planning and trust and foundation management.

Founding partner Maria Chetcuti Cauchi is a key contact at Chetcuti Cauchi Advocates for advice on establishing asset management entities, and her expertise also includes sub-fund and SICAV licensing, and tax and regulatory issues. Priscilla Mifsud Parker, who has a background in corporate and trusts, advises on wealth management and business structuring for high net-worth individuals, family businesses and multinational companies. The practice also acts for clients in the burgeoning virtual asset fund space.
