The environmental law unit at Rattagan Macchiavello Arocena is ‘synonymous with quality’ and sources are quick to highlight its ‘impressive depth of knowledge’ and ‘broad expertise’. Indeed, few would argue that the firm houses ‘the best environmental law practice in Argentina’. In particular, ‘master in his field’ Gabriel Macchiavello is regarded by many as ‘the best in the country, bar none’. Macchiavello leads a team that covers the full gamut of environmental issues, including corporate support matters, compliance audits, permitting and certifications, administrative proceedings and high-stakes litigation. Climate change, oil and gas and clean-up issues stand out as notable sweet spots. Other recommended names include Pedro Zambrano, who brings to bear an impressive record in complex litigation, and energy specialist María Magdalena Venditti. Corporate practitioner Santiago Oliva Pinto has been raised to the partnership.

Brons & Salas’ ‘personalised client service’ and ‘professional approach’ stand out as key draws for clients. The practice, which is led by transactional environmental specialist Guillermo Malm Green, is widely sought after for its combined weight in corporate support matters, general consultancy issues and litigation. Recent work includes advising 3M Argentina on proceedings relating to the approval of hydraulic works and on obtaining related environmental permits. Associate Agostina Mandrini is ‘very competent and attentive’ and is recommended for contentious matters.

Pre-eminent boutique Franco Abogados is renowned for its specialist expertise in energy and natural resources-related work and enjoys close links to major multinationals in the oil and gas, mining and chemical sectors – including Shell, Yamana Gold and BASF. It also acts for a significant number of automotive and life sciences clients. Horacio Franco is a ‘walking encyclopaedia on environmental law’ and his experience covers an array of compliance issues, environmental audits, administrative defence and judicial litigation (including criminal actions). Associate Soledad Caldumbide is also highly regarded.

Marval, O'Farrell & Mairal excels across the full spread of transactional support matters, regulatory issues and environmental litigation. Oil and gas expert Francisco Macías heads the group and continues to represent Compañía General de Combustibles in three environmental class actions filed by ASSUPA against several oil and gas companies, which seek remediation for the alleged damage caused by exploration and production activities. On the transactional front, the team advised GE on the environmental aspects of its acquisition of a stake in YPF Energía Eléctrica. Senior associate Gabriel Fortuna is also a key contact.

The ‘effective and knowledgeable’ group at Nicholson y Cano Abogados is led by ‘true specialist’ Horacio Payá, who brings to bear a strong record in compliance matters – including a nine-year stint in-house at oil company Perez Companc. The group, which is particularly recognised for its strength in oil and gas-related work, acts on a good balance of advisory, corporate support and contentious matters. Representative clients include Grenergy, Shell and Total Austral.

Allende & Brea covers all the bases in environmental law but is best known for its robust expertise in regulatory matters and complex administrative, civil and criminal litigation. Administrative law specialist María Morena del Río heads the group and acted alongside the energy department to advise Minera del Altiplano on the environmental aspects of its new lithium project in Catamarca. Ferrero Argentina, Masisa Argentina and Unipar Indupa are also key clients.

Under the joint leadership of energy and natural resources specialists Sergio Arbeleche and Sebastián Vedoya, the environmental practice at Bruchou, Fernández Madero & Lombardi has a distinct focus on mining and oil and gas-related matters. Recent work includes advising First Quantum Minerals’ local subsidiary, Corriente Argentina, on the environmental permitting process for the construction of the Taca Taca mining project.

Very responsive’, Beccar Varela has a strong track record in advising on the environmental law aspects of corporate transactions – it also advises on compliance and contentious matters. Administrative law expert Oscar Aguilar Valdez heads a ‘collaborative team’ that also draws upon the experience of ‘well-informed and practical’ energy specialist José Carlos Cueva and senior associate Ángeles Murgier. Highlights included advising energy transportation and distribution company, LITSA, on regulatory matters.

Among Baker McKenzie’s recent matters, department head Adolfo Durañona advised Albemarle on permitting and regulatory issues related to its acquisition of an equity participation in a company holding certain mining rights. The mining sector is a key source of instructions but it also acts for a strong stable of clients operating in the chemical, energy and infrastructure spheres – representative names include Franklin Electric and Qingdao Qianyun High-Tech New Material Co.

M & M Bomchil has broad cross-sector experience in environmental law, however, its market-leading power practice ensures a significant volume of environmental matters pertaining to the electricity sector. Among its recent work, the firm represented Central Dock Sud in an environmental case before the Supreme Court, which was filed by individuals claiming compensation for environmental damages caused in the Matanza-Riachuelo Basin. Laura Lavia Haidempergher leads the department.
