Although Rattagan Macchiavello Arocena is a full-service firm, sources attest that its dedicated environmental unit provides ‘specialist service worthy of a boutique’. Certainly, its reputation in the area is impressive, with clients and peers alike highlighting it as ‘streets ahead of the competition’ due to its ‘strong all-round expertise’ and ‘excellent management of sensitive cases’. Leading boutique Franco Abogados concentrates exclusively on environmental law and associated health and safety issues, under the guidance of highly-rated name partner Horacio Franco. The firm’s specialist focus translates into a broad practice that fields strong niche expertise across its four distinct areas, namely consultancy (including general regulatory and compliance advice), environmental audits, administrative defence and judicial litigation (including criminal actions). ‘Very able’ associate Soledad Caldumbide provides capable support.

At Marval, O'Farrell & Mairal, energy and natural resources head Francisco Macías steers the environmental law practice and is ‘reliable under pressure’. The ‘pragmatic and creative’ group also includes two recommended senior associates, namely, ‘rising starGabriel Fortuna and Jimena Montoya. On the non-contentious side, the firm represented Volkswagen Argentina in regulatory matters related to vehicle emissions. Among contentious mandates, it advised Compañía General de Combustibles on three environmental class actions filed by ASSUPA against several oil and gas companies seeking remediation for alleged damage caused by exploration and production activities. Nicholson y Cano Abogados’ ‘solid environmental practice’ impresses with its ‘dedicated and strategic lawyers’. In particular, department head Horacio Payá stands out for his ‘strong experience and client-focused approach’. Recent work includes advising a multinational waste treatment company on the management of its environmental permits, as well as assisting a mining company with the environmental and health and safety compliance audits of its industrial plants. In line with Del Rio’s particular expertise, the group regularly represents clients in administrative, civil and criminal proceedings. Significant cases include representing Solvay Indupa in litigation brought by former employees of a plant alleging environmental damages to the community. Bruchou, Fernández Madero & Lombardi’s increasingly prominent practice continues to build its market profile under the joint leadership of energy specialists Sergio Arbeleche and Sebastián Vedoya. The firm notably leverages its robust mining practice to secure a significant share of environmental work in that sector, with Barrick Gold, First Quantum Minerals and Patagonia Gold all among those turning to the firm for advice on ongoing environmental and regulatory matters. Recent work includes advising First Quantum Minerals on the permitting process to obtain the environmental impact approval for the construction of its high-profile Taca Taca project.

Energy and natural resources expert Adolfo Durañona heads Baker McKenzie’s practice and is recommended for his experience acting on the environmental aspects of major infrastructure and energy projects. In a recent example, Durañona advised a mining company on obtaining environmental permits to perform mining exploration activities. The firm also regularly advises on due diligence, environmental audits, response plans and contentious matters.

The practice group at M & M Bomchiloperates at a high level’, according to clients who also commend its ‘strong responsiveness’. Led by Laura Lavia Haidempergher, who is singled out as ‘very pragmatic’, the team handles a broad range of transactional support work, risk management and environmental litigation on behalf of domestic and multinational corporations.
