Position

Paul Cozens has over 30 years of experience in the IP profession, which includes a track record constructing from scratch a number of major patent portfolios in addition to carving out useful patent monopoly in difficult areas. He has also undertaken a number of critical infringement risk assessment assignments over an array of technical areas.

Paul’s clients span the engineering and software sectors, as well as blue chip names in the financial services sector, where he is at the forefront of developing techniques for procuring patent protection for business process inventions. He also acts for clients in the environmental technology sector, including in the areas of wind and distributed energy, and is handling an increasing volume of instructions in relation to the areas of AI and cryptocurrency.

Career

Examples of Paul’s clients include large corporates such as De’Longhi Braun Household, Kenwood Limited, United Utilities and Honeywell, several SMEs including Semafone Limited and Halma, and a large number of startups and early stage companies generated through his relationships with incubators and accelerators.

In addition to being a registered Patent and Trade Mark Attorney, Paul is a qualified Higher Courts Litigator. He led the team that successfully represented Memco (now Avire) v Strack in patent infringement proceedings in the IPEC.

Paul heads up the firm’s large Engineering group. He also speaks at seminars on topics including accelerators and incubators and has contributed to a number of publications in the field of IP.

He is a Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney, European Design Attorney, and Registered Trade Mark Agent.

He sits on the Software Committee of the Chartered Institute of Patent Agents.

Education

Paul has a Master’s Degree in Engineering from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in Computational Fluid Dynamics from the University of London, and has subsequent experience as a practising engineer.
