Career
Sergio co-leads the Latin America Banking & Finance Practice for DLA Piper and is head of the Banking and Finance group in Peru.
He represents commercial banks, investment banks, multilateral agencies, ECA´s, private equity funds, and corporations in connection with a wide range of domestic and cross-border financings, including bridge financings, mezzanine loans, syndicated loans, acquisition financings, asset-based loans, and restructurings. He also represents issuers, investors, and investment banks in various domestic and cross-border capital markets transactions and advises regularly concerning securities law matters.
During the last 20 years, Sergio has been counseling financial institutions, nonbank financial services firms, and financial technology companies on mergers and acquisitions, strategic investments, and other corporate transactions, as well as on the full spectrum of legal and banking regulatory matters.
Sergio serves as a member of the board of several companies, specifically financial institutions supervised by the Peruvian banking authorities. He shares his practice with teaching Banking Law at Universidad de Lima and in other private institutions.

The capital markets team at DLA Piper Perú leverages its international network of offices to advise local banks and other financial institutions on a range of matters, including securities placements, regulatory concerns and bond issuances. The firm also undertakes work relating to public equity and debt capital transactions, listings in international markets, offerings of high-yield bonds, and Rule 144A / Reg.S transactions. Co-managing partner Sergio Barboza oversees the department and offers strong capital markets regulation know-how.
