Career
Juan Tagle has been a partner of Prieto since 2005 and joined the firm in 1998.
He is the head of the Mergers and Acquisitions area and is also active in the Firm’s Financial and Energy and Natural Resources groups.
In the last few years, he has been actively involved in diverse M&A transactions, with an outstanding leadership role in counseling an important local economic group in more than 50 acquisitions and mergers of supermarket chains throughout the country, as well as counseling domestic and international clients in transactions for the acquisition and merger of companies of the most diverse lines of business.
In the financial sphere, he has been involved in important domestic and international financial transactions (syndicated loans and project financing), financial restructuring, security market transactions, including takeover bids and bond issuing.
He is also permanently involved in counseling clients in the energy and natural resource sectors, on matters such as power plant construction projects, the negotiation of gas and electricity purchase contracts, joining ventures and bidding.
In the last few years, he has been extremely active in the port sector, counseling Public Port Companies and private companies in the regulatory and administrative aspects of diverse port bidding processes, such as the negotiation of the respective contracts.
He earned his law degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in 1990. In 1991 he worked in the Ministry General Secretariat of the Presidency. Between 1994 and 1996 he was a partner of the law firm Tagle, Cifuentes & Cía., and studied for a postgraduate degree at the University of Chicago, United States (LLM, 1997)
He worked at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, New York, 1997-1998, where he was involved in diverse capital market and M&A transactions for Latin American companies. He is as a member of the Boards of Directors of companies and has taught civil and commercial law (School of Law of the Universidad Católica de Chile, between 1993 and 1996 and in 1999).
Juan Tagle has received ongoing recognition by Chambers and Partners in the areas of Energy and Natural Resources, Mergers and Acquisitions and Finance. He is permanently involved in the Firm’s pro bono activities, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the ProBono Foundation, as well as the Chilean Bar Association.

Examples include the acquisition of a large energy generation portfolio and the development of battery energy storage system projects. Acting for electricity generators, transmission companies, construction firms, and investment funds, the team’s experience also covers the sale of unconventional renewable energy projects’ plant portfolios, including the management of bidding processes. Prieto Abogados‘ ‘responsible, proactive and punctual’ team is able to leverage the full-service firm’s expertise in energy, infrastructure and real estate for mining matters. The 13-strong group can also boast strong relationships with major investment funds. The practice is co-led by Juan Tagle, a regular adviser on mining projects who also leads the firm’s M&A offering; and Agustín Martorell, whose experience includes both advising major mining companies on mining option agreements and participating in mining industry-related administrative sanctioning procedures.
