James specialises in all areas of private family law with a particular emphasis on divorce and high net worth/complicated financial remedy proceedings. He trained and worked at London’s leading firm for family law. He returned home to Manchester in 2007 to work in the North West’s top family law team. He moved to JMW in 2011 becoming a partner in 2012. One of four partners, in the time he was a partner the department moved from tier 4 to tier 1 in Chambers and Partners. In April 2016 he and fellow partner Sam Hall left to start Hall Brown Family Law. In only 2 and a half years Hall Brown Family Law has become one of the largest and busiest family law teams in the North West. James acted for Charles Sharland in the Supreme Court case Sharland v Sharland [2015] 2 FLR 1367. Other high profile reported cases include acting for Stacey Giggs (wife of the sports star and Wales football manager Ryan Giggs) in Giggs v Giggs [2017] EWHC 822.  James is particularly noted for balancing attention to detail with an ability to see the bigger picture. James has acted for lawyers, doctors, professional sports people and entrepreneurs with personal wealth up to over £550 million. James lectures to legal and non-legal professionals, writes for legal publications and is widely quoted in the national media.
