Greg Stewart is the practice head of GT Stewart Solicitors & Advocates. He has 30 years’ experience as a solicitor-advocate who handled criminal defence and appeals work relating to serious criminal charges including murder and drug conspiracy. He has appeared in many high-profile and sensitive cases in the Crown Court, High Court, Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

He is creative and dynamic and looks after his clients with extraordinary care and commitment. His practice has attracted professional recognition over the years in the leading law directories (Chambers & Partners & Legal 500 and The Times Best Law Firms) which reflects his reputation and standing in the legal community.

Greg leads the Criminal Appeals team and co-heads our Specialist Youth Court team. He is experienced with applications to the Court of Appeal and the Criminal Cases Review Commission which examines and investigates alleged miscarriages of justice. He is co-author of the Criminal Appeals handbook (Bloomsbury 2nd edition). He is a committee member of the Criminal Appeals Lawyers Association (CALA). He is regularly invited to contribute to training sessions and discussions on topical areas of criminal practice and he is a member of various working groups on youth justice and advocacy standards. In 2023, he was invited to assist with drafting the SRA Guide to Best Practice in the Youth Court.

As a state educated lawyer whose family had not previously attended university he has consistently promoted diversity and equality of opportunity in the profession to ensure that future candidates are not prevented from joining the profession due to a lack of confidence or familiarity with the conventions of the law.

Greg is also on the Advisory Board of the Youth Justice Legal Centre (YJLC) and in 2019 received the Youth Justice Champion Award to recognise his passion in promoting the YJLC’s commitment to a wider awareness of the legal issues affecting children in the criminal justice system. He has many reported appellate challenges to unfair aspects of youth court practice that have resulted in improvements in criminal procedure for children and young people. GT Stewart is well known as an outstanding firm in the area of children’s rights.
